As a
result of my investigations into the use of Transmedia narratives in Angry Birds across multi-platforms, it
is clear how storytelling is a fundamental part of a game’s construction. My
lack of awareness surrounding the wider complexity of the Angry Birds world has truly been exposed, for I had little
knowledge on the variety of platforms the franchise operated in. This
underestimated the vast nature of the brand itself and the influence it can
have on audiences across a mediated space. The monumental success of the game
series has been illustrated through the span of platforms the narrative flows
across, from initially the app to comics, film and even themeparks. This has
even sparked creativity in myself, such as through the construction of my own
‘British’ Angry Birds edition and
imagery through filters on Snapchat. Despite having some previous experience
with the app and its supporting materials, the extent to which Angry Birds has affiliated itself within
multiple industries is truly remarkable. Initially it was unlikely that I’d be
so immersed within the narrative of flightless birds on a quest to redeem their
stolen eggs, however through the research of Transmedia storytelling, it is
clear to see how it had been intricately constructed across platforms to keep
audiences engaged for years to come. On reflection of this case study, it is
clear that Angry Birds continues to
entice audiences with its new narrative strands, and they have the means to do
this successfully through their dispersion into multiple industries.
To
conclude, Angry Birds is a mobile app
game which has transformed the way in which audiences can interact with a text
via multiple platforms, both digitally and within the real world. During its
first release, the app was merely a puzzle based game to entertain audiences as
on the go entertainment, its reach only throughout Europe. Its expanse across
the digital realm and through the emersion web 2.0 technologies, Angry Birds escalated into a growing
empire that spanned across industries. The interconnections between narrative
strands from the app to other platforms has created this complex fictional
world which audiences can delve themselves into, creating a unified and
coordinated user experience. Since its ever-growing span of game releases, Angry Birds has delighted audiences with
lighthearted entertainment, fueling the demand for more exciting projects. It
truly has become a cross-platform text that had generated a loyal, global-spanning,
community. Its audience members have become both users and creators, adding and
growing the Angry Birds world on a
mass scale, contributing to the game to keep the game alive and continue to
release exciting new games for audiences to come. Angry Birds: “the largest mobile app success the world has seen so
far”.
